THE END OF A SWEET LIFE
Sufferings of Miss Marion C. Spier Are Ended
SHE IS NOW AT REST
The End Came at Six O'clock Saturday
Evening-The Funeral Was
Held This Morning and Was Private-
Many Floral Pieces.
That' "death leaves a shining mark" was fully exemplified Saturday evening at six o'clock when the spirit of Miss Marion C. Spier passed into the great beyond. Miss Spier was,the third daughter of Mrs. Marion Spier and the late Colonel Andrew Spier, and while her death was not unexpected, the entire community was grieved by the announcement that her sweet life was ended.
The deceased was a trained nurse, having graduated at the Garfield Memorial Hospital, Washington, D. C. Some ten days ago, while administering to a patient at the Allegany Hospital, diphtheria developed, quickly followed by a mastoid abscess, and blood poisoning, later communicating to the brain. With the hope of combating the trouble, Dr. H. O. Relk, of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, was summoned and who, assisted by local surgeons, performed an operation, which, while being successful, afforded little relief. In fact it was seen by the surgeons that there was no hope of saving her life. Yet Miss Spier struggled so heroically against the malady that her friends were led to hope against hope, and refused to believe that she would not get well until the very last spark died out.
As a trained nurse, Miss Spier performed her duty in a faithful and conscientious manner, and there was many a tear found its way down the cheeks of those whom she had helped nurse back to health. She was not robust when called upon to take the last case which she nursed, having been debilitated by overwork, but she yielded, and the result is too well known.
Miss Spier, aside from being a graduate of one of the best training schools in the country, was a natural-born nurse, and was interested in the patients with whom she labored. When one of the patients over whom she labored happened to die, it seemed to grieve her just as much as it did those to whom such an one was near and dear.
Not only was she a most excellent nurse, but her life was perfect in every way, and her untimely end has caused more heartfelt sorrow than that of any other in recent years at least.
Miss Spier was a consistent member of the First Presbyterian Church. Besides her mother, she is survived by one brother, Allen B. Spier, of the Second National Bank, and five sisters, Mrs. Bell (wife of John J. Bell, deputy appraiser of the port of Baltimore); and Mrs. A. R. Upham, of Baltimore, and Misses Anna, Mollie and Jessie Spier, of Cumberland, the latter being a trained nurse, having also graduated from Garfiefd Memorial Hospital.
The funeral services of Miss Spier were held this morning at 10 o'clock from the residence at 66 Washington Street, and were private, and were conducted by Rev.James E. Moffatt, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.
The body was placed in a hermetically sealed casket last night, and removed to the parlor. The floral pieces sent by those who knew and loved Miss Spier were so numerous that it required an extra conveyance to carry them to the grave in Rose Hill Cemetery, where the interment was made.
The pallbearers were Dr. James T. Johnson, Dr. Thomas W. Koon. Dr. E. L. Jones, Dr. W. R.. Ford, Dr. R. Y. Fechtig, Dr. T. B. MacDonald, Dr. H. S. Walles, and Dr. S.B. Claybrook.
