June 20, 2008, Cumberland Times-News - Ruth Harden Geary, 84, of Cumberland, passed away, Friday, June 20, 2008 at WMHS-Memorial Campus. Born Sept. 21, 1923 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Harold B. and Cecelia E. (Feidt) Harden. She was also preceded in death by her husband George E. Geary on February 21, 1991. Ruth was retired from the Maryland Department of Transportation. Ruth graduated from Allegany High School in 1941 and for several years organized the reunions for her class. While in high school she was awarded the first prize for the best essay on "The American Flag—It’s Meaning to Me as an American Citizen" sponsored and given to her by the Cumberland Lodge No. 63, B.P.O. Elks. Ruth enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing the organ. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She is survived by her children, Ruth Summers and husband Bill, Cumberland and Pat Speir and husband Ron, Gaithersburg; grandchildren, Todd F. Gallen, Cumberland, Leigh Ann Norris and husband Gary, Cumberland, Tracey Oyler, Winchester, Va., Ruth Ann Speir-Bichy and husband Brian, Rockville and Ronald Speir Jr., Winchester; great-grandchildren, Gary Norris Jr., Cumberland, Trevor and Travis Oyler, Winchester and Lucas Bichy, Rockville. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com ) on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with Msgr. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the WMHS Foundation designated for Nursing Tuition Scholarships, P.O. When Patty married Ronnie Speir, her maiden name was Miller. The wedding announcement lists her mother at that time as Ruth Mangus. She apparently was married a 3rd time to Mr. Geary.
