from the Religious Herald 12-5-1844
For the Religious Herald.
Departed this life, at his residence, In Prince George county, Virginia., on the 1st day of November, 1844, HENRY M. DANIEL, in the 31st year of his age, of congestive fever. During his sickness, his sufferings were great, which he bore with patience and fortitude, in view of his approaching destiny. His disease baffled all medical aid, and though, in the prime of life, with bright prospects before him, he is called to pay that debt of nature, in the midst of surrounding friends and weeping relatives.
The deceased embraced religion in the year 1837, was baptized, and united with the Baptist church at Shiloh, in which connection he lived a useful life. In the year 1842, he was licensed by the church to preach, which he accepted with becoming modesty. It was more on the account of brother D.'s piety and exemplary walk as a Christian, which led to this act, on the part of the church, than a talent for public speaking. He was a man of weakley constitution, effeminate voice, and ordinary talents and, although he was not considered much of a preacher, he was one in whom the church and people had confidence; a man calculated to do good in his sphere of action. The Bible with its plain practical precepts and examples, Jesus and him crucified, were themes upon which he delighted to dwell. His preaching was of a mild and persuasive character, more of the form of an exhortation than otherwise. He was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry, on Friday before the 4th Sunday in Sept. last, according to the usual customs of the Baptist Church. His work was soon done, and he was called to render an account, not as thousands are, (unprepared,) but as those who have fought a good fight, though the warfare be short, and are found in readiness to meet the Lord. The Bible, its doctrines which he had endeavored to impose upon the minds of others, was his strong support and comfort in his last moments having an unshaken confidence in the Blessed Redeemer, to whom he had committed the interest of his soul, and relying upon His faithful promises, he prepared to meet death, with [illegible] and resignation, saying to all around that he was willing to be absent in the body, in order to be present with the Lord. His was, to all human appearances, a triumphant death, bearing testimony to the value and importance of the religion of the Bible. As a man and a Christian, he was much beloved by those who knew him best. He has left a widow and two children to morn their loss. May the Lord sustain them who has promised to be a Father to the fatherless and a Husband to the widow. And may all who read this notice take heed for, in such an hour as you think not, the son of man cometh.
